Dermabrasion targets skin concerns that are difficult to treat with over-the-counter products. This includes acne or surgical scars, age spots, and wrinkles. Dr. Lee performs dermabrasion at his Newport Beach office to help your skin look and feel its best.

What Is the Dermabrasion Procedure?

Dermabrasion is a surgical procedure in which a doctor removes the outer layer of skin using a small motorized device. The device will use a gentle pressure applied to the skin to gently remove the outer layer. After the procedure, your skin will be covered using moist dressings, and the healing process can begin. Over time, as the skin heals, you will see more clear, even-looking skin emerge.

Conditions Addressed By Dermabrasion

This procedure can be used to address several skin concerns. Some of the most common skin concerns addressed by dermabrasion include:

  • Sun damage
  • Acne scars
  • Surgical scars
  • Fine lines or wrinkles
  • Age spots

Who Is a Candidate for Dermabrasion?

If you have acne scars, sun damage, or other skin concerns, you may be a candidate for dermabrasion. To determine if you are a good candidate for the procedure Dr. Lee will have you visit his office for a consultation. During this time he will examine your skin, review your medical history, and discuss your concerns. Those with certain skin conditions, or a history of keloids, may not be a candidate. If this is the case, Dr. Lee will recommend other treatments that better fit your needs.

How Dermabrasion Is Performed

Dermabrasion is a surgical procedure that may be performed in-office, or in our surgical facility. Anesthesia or sedation will be used to help you remain relaxed and comfortable during the procedure. A small device with an abrasive piece is moved across the face to gently remove the outer layer of skin. The procedure takes less than an hour to complete for most patients.

After Your Procedure

Once the procedure is complete, your skin will be wrapped in moist dressings. You will receive full post-operative care instructions from Dr. Lee on when to change your dressings and how to care for your skin. You will also return to his office for a follow-up appointment to ensure your skin is healing properly. While your skin is healing, it will be red, swollen, and blotchy. This will decrease over time as the skin fully heals. Your results will start to be visible after two weeks, but it will take several weeks to see the complete results.
